MY GP referred me but the local NHS won't cover it. They said I'll need to go out of area or go private. What meds are available here? I was on Adderall XR in the States.

mhoelterhoff is wondering what meds are available in UK
Stimulants you can get Ritalin, Concerta and Dexedrine. Adderall's not here yet but the slow release version of Dex (begins with V I think) might be coming here next year. You might need to go out of area to get diagnosed but they need to pay for it! View the forum at www.aadd.org.uk and you'll be able to find threads that will help and advise you on the next move.
Hi mhoelterhoff, I was referred by my GP to an Adult ADHD expert and got a diagnosis, the thing is that I had to do the legwork and find the expert first, and unfortunately that's the way to do it in the UK at the moment. You need to find an expert in Adult ADHD and get your GP to refer you, its really the only way to get diagnosed at present. PB
Only child psychiatrists have had any training about ADHD so even if you get a referral to a psychiatrist it may not be helpful. On the website I mentioned - aadd.org, there's a list of suitable psychiatrists I think. I don't know if there's one in your area. I think there's also suggestions about how to approach the doctor. Things are set to change here when new guidelines on ADHD for the medical profession come out in September.
Thanks for the welcome. I was wondering if anyone has had a positive referral from a GP to a psychiatrist for treatment of Adult ADHD? Lets just say my experience has not been so positive!
Hi Mark, thanks for joining the UK group. Hopefully we can share information and improve provision. There's also a newish website run by and for ADHD people in the UK. It's www.aadd.org They're getting good information onto the site.
