Jack, Vacuums, and Fire trucks, Oh my!
11:50 PM on Jun. 22, 2009
I was picked almost 6 yeas ago to be Jack's Mommy.  Don't ask me who picked me, because I don't know.  I gave birth to my little dude In September of 2003 and WOW, what a ride it's been so far.  I wouldn't change a bit of it, either!

Jack was a big baby - 20.5 inches long and 8.5 pounds.  They were worried about the growth of his head during my pregnancy, but luckily his body caught up to his giant melon.  I know how giant it was, because I delivered it!  Shortly after he was born, we figured out he had GERD.  Yup, I got up-chucked on regularly.  There were times I looked like a Rorschach test.  A little bit of Zantac, then Prevacid, and he could finally keep down food and keep it off of my jeans.  This was a good thing.

As Jack grew, so did his obsession with vacuum cleaners.  Don't ask me where it comes from.  We have no clue.  We were not allowed to walk past the vacuum aisle in a store without him being able to tell us in "Jackanese" all about the "bacuums."  It was an interesting time.  Life literally sucked for a while, but again, it was a good thing.

Fast forward to about 3 years old, and Jack's daycare invited the local fire department to drop by with one of their engines.  We were told that Jack freaked out and started climbing the teachers to get away.  Apparently that was all it took for my little dude - he was hooked.  He'll be 6 soon and he is obsessed with fire tucks, firefighters, paramedics, police, you name it.  He could probably teach fire fighters a few things about their own equipment now.

That's a brief intro to my little dude.  He's an amazing little boy, who has carried a lot on his shoulders over these past 6 years.  It's an exciting ride and there are times when we're just barely hanging on for dear life, but still wouldn't trade it for the world.

More on Jack at another date...

Your little guy reminds me of my Paul. When he was young, he was so into skateboarding. He could do all the flips and kicks and spins - he even got his picture take a few times for the local paper. I remember one time that the school wanted me to take his skateboard away from him as a form of punishment. They figured that if he lost the skateboard, he would spend more time focusing on his behaviour in school. I refused to do this, since I knew that that skateboard was keeping him from focusing on activities that would bring negative consequences into his life. I argued that since he was focused on skateboarding, he couldn't focus on getting into other kinds of trouble in the neighbourhood. The school didn't like my answer, but we found other ways of getting him to behave while in class while not taking away the one thing that he was good at and that filled his time with positive activity. He did make it through to adulthood in-tack and puts his hyperfocus towards things like fixing cars, building stereos, playing basketball and supporting his wife and two children with lots of hands on activities. I believe that we need to be advocates for our ADHD children. Learn what it is that really gets them excited and encourage them to become so involved in those positive activities that all else falls away. Keep up the great work Mom - PS Love the pic of Jack in the fireman's hat - I think I know what Jack is going to be when he grows up! What a great occupation.

'smile' you make me think of my son and his first walk on Halloween. He just had to touch all the pumpkins as we passed each house. He would walk towards the jack o lanterns, touch and smile. I still don't know why but, even to this day, he has an obsession to touch them. He's twenty five years old this year. A story I will always remember from the many stories to tell. cheers.
